Laboratory Make Up Policy
See the individual course syllabi for
lecture make up policies.
Students are eligible to make up labs and assignments in the labs according
to the rules outlined in this document. Read this document completely
BEFORE contacting Mr.Thomas Harpstead (432-1316 x137).
Different Types of Absences and How They Are Handled
Pre-arrangement required. Absences in this category:
concerts, plays, conferences, weddings, and other similar pre-planned activities. A
request for make ups for this sort of absence must be submitted early enough that a
make-up schedule is agreed to before the date of absence.
Regularly scheduled submissions such as lab reports must be turned in on time. There will
be no exceptions.
Pre-arrangement preferred but not required. Absences in this
category: religious observations and court dates. Students should make prearranged
plans for this sort of absence if possible. However, if a make-up schedule is not
prearranged, a request for make ups will be considered for 5 working days after the
absence. Regularly scheduled submissions such as lab reports must be turned in on time
regardless of whether make ups are prearranged; no exceptions will be made.
Unexpected problems. Absences in this category: illnesses,
family emergencies, car accidents and other substantial problems of an unexpected nature.
Students may initiate a request for make ups at any time up to 5 working days after the
absence. Later requests will be considered on an individual basis in extreme cases.
Requests for late submission of regularly scheduled submissions such as lab reports will
be considered.
Written Documentation Always Required
No make ups or other special arrangements will be approved without written
documentation. See the next section for when documentation is due.
Who To Contact and Other Procedural Matters
Who to contact: The Biological Sciences Office in 218
North Kedzie Laboratory (NKL) is open from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and
1:00 - 4:30 p.m. on Monday through Friday. To schedule make ups for lab
experiences and assignments, contact Mr.Thomas Harpstead calling 432-1316 x137 or E-mailing him at harpste2@msu.edu. You may also walk in
during his office hours: Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and
2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Also, you may call and leave a message at 432-1316
anytime and Mr. Harpstead will contact you as soon as possible.
Scheduling and Completing make ups: You must contact
Mr. Harpstead within 5 working days of your absence to schedule make up.
All make ups must be completed within 10 working days of the absence.
Make ups will not be scheduled after that time. Extreme cases, such as
lengthy illnesses, will be assessed on an individual basis.
Submitting written documentation: If you have questions
about the nature of the written documentation required for any sort of
absence, ask Ms. Gorzenski. You may initiate a request for make ups without
written documentation. You must always, however, submit the required written
documentation to the Biological Science office within 10 working days
after your initial request to Mr. Harpstead. Failure to submit documentation
in this time period will nullify any excuses and result in a zero for
any assignment that was not completed on the regular class schedule. Only
truly extreme cases will be considered for exception to this rule.
Dating of written documentation for unexpected absences: Written
documentation for illnesses must be signed by a professional health-care provider within 3
days before or 1 day after the date of the absence and must indicate that you were ill on
the actual date of absence. Documentation for a car accident must be signed by a police
officer, insurance agent, or other qualified official within 3 days of the accident and
must indicate that the accident occurred on the date of your absence. Written verification
for funerals (newspaper account or letter from funeral home) can be dated for up to one
week before or after your absence.
